Meet Jamie
Meet Jamie.
I met Jamie through a Ted Talk, “Reclaim Yourself: The Most Valuable Investment You’ll Make” on YouTube.
Striding on to the stage in a gorgeous red dress and heels, Jamie told a story that sounded ever so familiar. The comfort*, the joy* of alcohol. The instinct to hear this thing called a Lockdown was about to happen, so essentials in the form of wine and lots of it was to be bought. Personally, I remember thinking oh I can be drunk, or hungover, and no one will see! What a treat this is!
Jamie is 44 and it is no exaggeration to say she has transformed her life in the last 2 years. From being the loudest, and the last, in the pub, to being a sober, fit, champion for women’s rights who has a Ted Talk watched almost 100,000 times.
Alcohol was making her sick - so she quit.
Quitting alcohol gave her energy - so she began running.
The clear headedness came - and at the right time - as she had to navigate the loss of her beloved Mother.
The strength that was building was there to serve her when news came of the abduction and murder of a local 33-year-old woman, Sarah Everard.
The sense of sadness combined with sober clarity pushed her to organise a vigil in one of South London’s biggest parks.
Her disbelief at the police arresting women for breaking lockdown rules to attend the vigil, propelled her to fight for justice at the London courts for those involved.
The fire in her belly about women’s safety inspired Jamie to launch #ReclaimTheseStreets. A UK charity and national movement that has been featured in the press, on TV, on documentaries, campaigning for the rights of women to be safe and to be free on streets everywhere.
