The Beauty Edition
One of the best parts of hitting that 40+ zone is the growing confidence in knowing who we are, what we want and having the courage to wear what we love!
A bold and bright lip colour can look amazing on pretty much anyone and its a quick and easy way to transform your look. If you're rocking a bright, bold and precise lip you will have that instant glam feel… even if the rest of your outfit is minimal…dare I say, active wear (!)
Lets discuss how to find that perfect bright and bold shade for you, some things to consider include: your skin tone, eye colour and the outfit/s you are wearing.
Skin Tone:
Matching your lipstick to your skin tone will create a beautiful and harmonious look:
Cool/pink undertone (tend to wear more silver jewellery) - blue-based and purple-based lipstick shades, think MAC Ruby Woo, NARS Impulse, L'Oréal Colour Riche Lipstick 453 Rose Crème
Warm/yellow undertones (tend to wear gold jewelry)- orange-based, warm lipsticks shades like Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Tell Laura, Armani Beauty Lip Magnet Liquid Lipstick #302, Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color 25 Heroine
Neutral - blue-based and orange-based lipstick shades will work
Now… having said that- if you want to walk into a room and make heads turn, try wearing shades that are contrasting to your skin tone. For example, yellow undertones can still look amazing in blue based tones, in fact it will give the most impact!
Eye Colour:
Blue Eyes- Orange/warm tones can make blue eyes pop
Green Eyes- Pinks/ Red tones can help to brighten green eyes (and will make your teeth look whiter)
Brown- all of the above
Outfits:
If you tend to wear more neutral shades or colourings similar to your skin tone, adding a bright bold lip colour can be the best way to complement your look. Think a pop of pink (NARS Schiap) or even a deep wine shade (MAC Diva) to avoid looking washed out.
Textures & Application:
Another thing to consider is the texture or finish of the lipstick, you may find lip products that have more of a creamy, satin or have a hint of gloss in them are most comfortable to wear and they are also great for making your lips look hydrated and plump.
When it comes to application, I always recommend using a matching lip pencil first to neatly define and balance the lips. It also helps in stopping the lipstick from bleeding into fine lines. I also colour the whole lip in with the pencil colour too, this ensures that when the lip colour fades, it fades evenly and you're not left with a pencilled line around your lip.
Final Thoughts:
If there is 1 takeaway from reading this, please remember, its only make-up! Give it a shot, try it out, just put it on….and if it's not for you, you can always just wipe it off…. Its not permanent!
